[BIOEVO] PhD position: behavioural ecology of damselflies

PhD studentship in Insect Evolutionary Ecology (KULeuven, Belgium)

GENERAL THEME: Evolutionary ecology of phenotypic syndromes (integrated patterns of behavioural, physiological and performance traits) in damselflies. The PhD project will concentrate on two questions: (1) Do larval phenotypic syndromes bridge metamorphosis and shape dispersal and mating success? (2) Do population characteristics (“natal habitat effects”) shape phenotypic syndromes and the resulting population differentiation in patterns of dispersal and sexual selection (“geographic selection mosaics”)?

Special attention will be given to the comparison of new versus old populations which likely differ in traits related to dispersal.

PRACTICAL WORK will be a combination of (1) monitoring natural field populations, and (2) common garden experiments in semi-natural populations (mesocosms / insectaries) and in the laboratory. We have excellent research facilities with an outdoor research area, several temperature-controlled rooms, incubators, and a well-equipped laboratory for quantification of behavioural, physiological and performance traits like swimming speed and flight ability.

PROFILE: master degree in Biology (also people finishing this degree are encouraged to apply) and with a strong interest in both field and laboratory work. Preference will go to candidates with experience in scoring behavioural, physiological and performance traits, or at least a strong motivation to learn relevant techniques. It is expected that the candidate applies for national funding opportunities. A car driving license is required.

OFFER: A full time job initially for a period of one year, but extendable to a total of four years pending good evaluation. Leuven (http://www.leuven.be) is a pretty historical university city with a very high and pleasant standard of living. The historic university, founded in 1425 (http://www.kuleuven.be/english), has a top research and teaching standard.

Within our research group we have ample expertise working with damselflies.

INTERESTED? Please send your CV, a letter of motivation including relevant experience, and contact details of two referents to Dr. Robby Stoks (robby.stoks@bio.kuleuven.be), University of Leuven, Laboratory of Aquatic Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Deberiotstraat 32, B-3000 Leuven, Belgium

Applications will be reviewed starting May 15 until the position is filled.

The start date is spring or summer 2009, preferentially as soon as possible.

New Vacancies from Academic Transfer

There are 6 new vacancies:
-----------------------------------------------
PhD student for Co-constructive literacy development in kindergarten [http://www.academictransfer.nl/org/vacancies/detail.cfm?vacature_ID=88A95952]
Radboud University Nijmegen This project 'Co-constructive literacy development in kindergarten' focuses on the effects of an intervention programme on child self-regulation and literacy competence development in kindergarten. The aim of the programme is to facilitate children’s transition from kindergarten to first grade. In the intervention, an attempt will be made to support children’s literacy abilities by means of mediated instruction. The project will also examine how ICT routines can enhance children’s self-regulatory and literacy skills. The summative effects of mediated instruction (with and without ICT support) on child self-regulation and child literacy competence will be investigated, as well as the role of the teacher in this process. The research questions are: 1. To what extent can the early literacy development of children be enhanced by means of a co-constructive intervention programme in kindergarten? 2. What is the role of ICT routines in enhancing children’s literacy development? 3. Is there any evidence of an intermediate effect of child self-regulation? 4. Are there any effects of the quality of literacy support by the teacher? 5. How can individual variation between children be explained? The results of your studies will be presented at yearly international conferences and will be published in at least five international publications. Your publications will result in a doctoral dissertation.
-----------------------------------------------
PhD student for Analytical Chemistry Chemometrics [http://www.academictransfer.nl/org/vacancies/detail.cfm?vacature_ID=5D5E9ACC]
Radboud University Nijmegen The project is a collaborative effort of the laboratories of Paediatrics and Neurology (Prof. Wevers, Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre) and Analytical Chemistry / Chemometrics (Prof. Buydens, Institute of Molecules and Materials, Radboud University Nijmegen). Complex data are currently being measured at an ever increasing rate, to the extent that the data analysis has become the rate-limiting step. In this project, you will set up and improve data analysis strategies, using chemometrics and multivariate statistics to analyse large numbers of NMR spectra of patients with metabolic diseases. The aims of the analyses include quality control, biomarker identification and disease classification.
-----------------------------------------------
PhD student for Beyond literacy development of hypermedia comprehension [http://www.academictransfer.nl/org/vacancies/detail.cfm?vacature_ID=AD64B5B3]
Radboud University Nijmegen The present study examines the development of hypermedia comprehension of children in the upper grades of primary school. It will be explored how children go beyond their literacy skills in developing hypermedia comprehension abilities to enhance web-based learning. The present research includes a study which explores the strategies fifth-grade primary school children use in hypermedia comprehension (e.g. on the basis of eye-tracking data) (study 1), the learner characteristics which explain the individual variation in hypermedia comprehension (study 2), and an instructional design-based study which aims to develop and analyse an instructional sequence that supports hypermedia comprehension to enhance web-based learning (study 3). The scientific importance of the present project lies in the fact that the comprehension of hypermedia in children is not yet fully understood. It is by no means clear how children learn to understand the nonlinear structure of hypermedia. The results of your studies will be presented at yearly international conferences and will be published in at least five international publications. Your publications will result in a doctoral dissertation.
-----------------------------------------------
PhD student for laser spectroscopy in health sciences [http://www.academictransfer.nl/org/vacancies/detail.cfm?vacature_ID=BFDFC81B]
Radboud University Nijmegen The topic of your research will be the development of highly sensitive trace gas detectors, based on continuous wave 2 µm lasers and state-of-the-art spectroscopic methods. The field of application will be the detection of trace gases in the exhaled breath of humans which may provide an early, non-invasive indication of diseases
-----------------------------------------------
Lecturer Hunter-gatherer Archaeology [http://www.academictransfer.nl/org/vacancies/detail.cfm?vacature_ID=OUQKH65P]
University of Groningen The objective of the position is to teach and conduct research in the field of hunter-gatherer archaeology, with a focus on prehistoric northwestern Europe. Teaching takes place as part of the department of archaeology, while the research is carried out within the Groningen Institute of Archaeology (GIA). The supervision of undergraduate, graduate and PhD students plays an important part in the position. In addition, the duties of the lectures also include participation in institute work groups and committees (management and administration).
-----------------------------------------------
Tenure Track (Assistant Professor) Quantitative Psychology [http://www.academictransfer.nl/org/vacancies/detail.cfm?vacature_ID=A60EHEUI]
University of Groningen The Department of Psychology at the University of Groningen invites applicants for a tenure track position in Quantitative Psychology. The search is targeted at the assistant professor level but exceptional candidates with more experience are also encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will teach introductory statistics or psychometrics in the English-language bachelor in Psychology programme and will supervise masters and PhD students. The subject of research in the field of statistics or psychometrics is open.
